Spencer Galen, Ph.D.

Excellence in Research and Scholarly Practice
This award acknowledges sustained, high-quality scholarly, creative, or applied work that engages students, builds scholarly community, addresses broader societal or ethical questions, and enhances the University’s academic reputation. The recipient of this award is Dr. Spencer Galen.
Dr. Spencer Galen is a fifth-year tenure-track faculty member who has already built a scholarly record that would be remarkable at any stage of an academic career. Since receiving his PhD in 2018 and joining the 51做厙, he has published fourteen articles and a book chapter in an open-source textbook, with two additional works in press. This past year he secured a highly competitive NSF grant of $483,851, and he regularly disseminates his findings at conferences with national and international audiences as well as through invited talks.
The impact of Dr. Galen's scholarship is reflected in numbers that speak for themselves. His work has been cited 755 times from his time at 51做厙 alone, with a total of 915 citations across his career to date. His h-index of 13 since arriving at the University places him among the most cited early-career scholars in his field. Equally impressive is his commitment to bringing students into that scholarly community. He has mentored more than twenty students across a range of research formats, many of whom have presented at conferences, with two currently developing their findings into manuscripts of their own.
